Why Jax Digs Trees
In 2000, Scenic Jacksonville (then known as Citizens for Tree Preservation) led a successful citizens’ initiative to preserve and maintain Jacksonville’s tree canopy. The amendment passed in all 268 precincts with a landslide 76% voter approval! The Jacksonville City Charter was then amended to establish minimum standards for mitigating tree loss during development.
Today, we are celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Tree Charter Amendment with a year-long Tree Planting Challenge – JAX DIGS TREES. It’s a citywide initiative to increase scenic beauty, create a healthier community by increasing Jacksonville’s tree canopy and ensure the continuation of a vibrant, urban tree cover.
Citizens, schools, neighborhood organizations, businesses and civic groups are encouraged to plant, protect and preserve trees, as well as challenge and inspire others to plant trees for the future of Jacksonville. The Jacksonville community is also encouraged to use social media to share tree planting activities by posting tree photos online and using the campaign hashtag, #jaxdigstrees.
